The satisfaction of standing back and looking at a thing you built with your own hands. Of solving a problem, having a crack, figuring it out. Anyone who's made anything - whether it's meal, a piece of furniture, or a mod for their 4x4 - knows the feeling. It's satisfying in a way that's hard to explain. There's pride in it. A sense that you backed yourself and it paid off. Australians have always been pretty good at that - rolling up their sleeves, figuring it out, and looking out for one another while they're at it. And that's really what buying local is about.
Behind every Australian made product is an ecosystem of engineers, tradespeople, suppliers and manufacturers who collectively keep local industry alive. When you buy local, you're supporting all of them. You're supporting fair wages and safe working conditions. You're backing businesses that comply with strict environmental standards. And you're investing in something that's genuinely hard to rebuild once it's gone: the capability to make world-class things, right here at home.
For us, this is personal. KAON was born out of a family workshop in West End, where our founder, Tin, grew up cleaning and oiling a small lathe his father Thang had bought during an economic downturn. That workshop became a family business, and that family business eventually became KAON. The tools have changed - today we use the same technology as the world's leading manufacturers. But the thinking behind it hasn't. The pride in making something well, the satisfaction of solving a real problem with your own hands - that's not just our origin story. It's genuinely why we still manufacture here today.
Because once that knowledge is gone, once the last person who knows how to do something retires, or the last workshop closes… it's very hard to get back. The hands-on knowledge that started our business all those years ago in the family garage has to be actively kept alive. It doesn't just sustain itself.
Which raises a fair question – does it actually make a difference?
The short answer: more than you might realise.
If every Australian household spent just $10 more per week on locally made products, it would add $5.6 billion to the economy (yes, that’s right – billion) and create close to 10,000 jobs. Small choices add up fast. At KAON, we're one part of a much bigger picture. For every product we make, we rely on a large network of other local Australian businesses to help with everything from lasercutting, powder coating, anodising, injection moulding, packaging, or printing. When you buy local, the benefits don't stop at the front door of one business.
So, what does the Australian-Made logo mean?
To carry it, a product must be manufactured or substantially transformed in Australia, with at least 50% of the cost of production originating in Australia. It's not self-declared - to obtain a licence, businesses must submit evidence to demonstrate their products meet the criteria, and are subject to ongoing third-party audits. It's administered by the Australian Made Campaign, a not-for-profit that's been running the logo since 1986. You can't just assemble imported parts locally and call it done.
When we label a product as Australian Made and Owned, it means that product is conceived, engineered, and built here by our Australian-owned business.

Now to address the elephant in the four-wheel drive.
There’s no denying it, Australian-made gear costs more. It’s more expensive to make things here - labour and materials are more expensive, compliance standards are stricter, and we're never going to match the price of something manufactured at scale overseas. But as the old adage goes: ‘Buy well, buy once’. Cheap gear tends to fail exactly when you need it most, on a track, far from help. Every one of our products is designed, tested, and built to withstand Australian conditions by a team that uses the gear themselves.
Most businesses don't manufacture locally because it makes financial sense... to be honest, it rarely does. It's a deliberate decision, a deep belief that how we make something matters just as much as what we make, and that the people behind it deserve to be looked after. We make that choice over and over again, with every order that goes out.
And we're not alone in thinking that way. For a small country, Australia has had a remarkable impact on the global 4x4 industry. Some of the most trusted gear in the world was dreamed up and built here first, usually by someone who got stuck somewhere remote and decided there had to be a better way.
We want to keep being part of that. Not just for our customers, but for the next generation of designers and engineers, makers and tinkerers.
That's why we make it here.
